Farming must not be encroached upon in California. Farmers themselves are the endangered species
and therefore require good-sense protection. Water needs to be used to grow food to keep people
alive. This approach keeps the country sovereign from foreign dependency.
I grew up in a farming area and on a small farm. I was in 4-H, vocational agriculture and FFA. As an
adult, I returned to agriculture as soon as possible after my formal education was completed.
Here are just a few illustrations to emphasize the need to maintain a domestic food source: September
2009, green onions grown in Mexico were recalled because of a possible salmonella contamination. Last
year, salmonella was traced back to Serrano peppers, jalapeño peppers, basil, and cilantro from Mexico.
Mexican candies have contained an excess of mercury and lead for years. In April 2008, raw heparin
products from China were found to be contaminated. In January 2008, some seafood from China
contained U.S. banned antibiotics because the fish farms were cultivated in polluted waterways. In May,
2007, a frozen product from China was labeled monkfish yet the fish was suspected as being pufferfish
since the former contained tetrodotox, a poison found in pufferfish.
In March 2006, soap from China was tested to be contaminated. In 2007, toothpaste from China was
found to contain a poison used in antifreeze products.
Threats to agricultural have inadvertently been imported. Most recently, the Asian citrus psyllid has been
discovered. The white striped fly from Asia has been identified. The Mexican fruit fly is still of concern.
The light brown apple moth appeared in August, 2009. The Mediterranean fruit fly is still a pest and has
been since the early 1980’s. The Glassy-winged sharpshooter, and unwelcome invader, created a real
concern in the late 1990’s.
These facts are presented merely to help sound the alarm since ‘an ounce of prevention” is more
economical than a whole lot of control and eradication. Also more details are available though are clearly
technical. The devastation may destroy the plant or the plant product, the fruit for example. The harm
may be directly to humans concerning illness. In any event, the economic impact may be catastrophic.
Let us keep agriculture in California; let us stand in support of farming and farmers; let us not let foreign
counties hold us hostage by outsourcing our food and food products.
