Robert Newman For Governor
Employment is a huge concern in our country as well as in the state of California . What is the
answer to the lack of employment opportunities in California ?  Should the government “create
jobs?”  Should government subsidize large businesses/corporations to keep job availability?   Should
cutting hours through furloughs or part time jobs become the answer to keep more people working?
These are some of the questions which have arisen when attempting to “fix” the problems with
respect to unemployment.

The answers to these questions must be long term.  We in America and especially in California want
a fast food, immediate gratification, immediate solution, instant photos, faster educational degrees,
faster growth in farm animals and vegetables, etc.  With this “faster-faster” philosophy, we also have
included faster wealth.  Indeed, money has become so important to American business that we
outsource our jobs to other countries.  With this outsourcing, comes some inferior products, the loss
of jobs in our country/state, and in some cases, the contamination of some products we receive.  It
should be recognized that the underlying component to a “faster-faster” philosophy which has so
permeated our society, especially in California , is greed.

The answer I pro-offer for the lack of employment opportunities has to do with a change of heart, a
genuine caring about America and our state, California .  Our philosophy must change. We need to
prioritize and put spouses, children, and people first. We must care more about our citizens than
about money.  Businesses are started by individuals.  So, individuals must invest for the long-term in
their businesses and their employees.

Concerning the above questions, more unnecessary government control is not a viable answer.  And
unfortunately, the “faster-faster” answer is not an answer at all.  Let’s face it; duct tape is usually a
temporary fix.  I believe that Americans/Californians need to care about their government, their Land,
pray over it, invest long term in it, and return to caring and investing in viable business.  Buy
American made product; buy locally to support small businesses, and invest in your community.

Employable people need to work.  Primarily people need to engage in intrinsically worthwhile activity.
Work structures ones time.  Work leads to income.  Income affords one the opportunity to explore,
experiment, and enjoy enriching experiences in life.  Furthermore, gainful employment helps stabilize
society by spending money, saving money, and paying taxes.

An enterprise can start up and flourish when there are fewer obstacles.  Whatever gets in the way
needs to be removed.  When I asked various business owners what factors they identified that
hindered their business from making a profit or from expanding, frequently the government was
identified as the obstacle:  government taxes, government regulations, or government oversight.

All of the costs of running a business and employing workers are part of the final product or service
price.  So, at least initially, various fees, licenses, regulations, need to be minimized.  These
government imposed costs can then be paid according to a reasonable schedule.   Thus the
business person, the risk taker, can have a built in incentive to be in business.  More businesses
lead to more employees.  But employment and the inability to get a job in the current economy in
California is about historically running businesses out of state or country by to much government
surveillance.  We need to welcome good reliable clean businesses to California .  This will assure
jobs.

California business concerns responsible care for the environment plus conservation of energy and
water.  Manufacturing or service businesses which further this goal need to be encouraged.
